Greetings from John Paul II High School, located in Greymouth on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand.

We expect and support our students to achieve to the highest standards of which they are capable. All students are made to feel welcome, safe, and part of our Christian family. Small classes offer students enhanced teacher support. Our academic success places us as the highest performing school on the West Coast and above average in New Zealand.

Location

Greymouth is a small port town with a population of about 10,000 people. The Southern Alps are visible from our school and bush-clad hills form the backdrop. Our school is an Integrated Roman Catholic secondary school for boys and girls between the ages of 12 and 18 years (Years 9 to 13). Our current roll is 190 students but we have a maximum roll of 240 students.

Facilities

We have general-purpose classrooms and specialist rooms including a modern music suite, laboratories for the study of science, physics, chemistry and biology, a hard materials workshop utilizing all hard materials as well as fabrics, Food Preparation Laboratory, Gymnasium, Fine Arts suite, modern Library and well-appointed Information and Communication Laboratories equipped with up-to-date computers. Students also have access to on-site Video-conferencing facilities.

Teaching

Teachers are well trained and highly experienced, some having taught in other countries. Secondary teachers are specialists and are all degree-qualified. In addition, a Guidance Counsellor, Vocational Guidance Advisor, a Sports Coordinator, a Special Educational Needs Coordinator, Information Centre Manager, ESOL teacher, and Careers Advisor support students.

The school provides playground space and equipment for lunchtime sporting activities to encourage fitness and social interaction between all students in our school. Canteen facilities are also provided on-site.

International Student Care

We are a signatory to the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students and have employees responsible for student Pastoral care. A supervisor ensures that quality Homestay families offer comfortable and secure accommodation to our International Students. Our Principal is the Academic Dean for International Students.

We have a resident ESOL teacher who provides support for the learning of English for speakers of other languages.

Additional costs include school uniform at approximately $550, and possibly sport and school trips. Other costs you must meet include Medical Insurance which costs approximately NZ$650 per year.
