Marist Leader
Namaste!
My name is Sarah Manoj, and I am honoured to serve as the Champagnat Marist leader for 2025.
This year, the main goal is to focus on a Whakatauki that I and the leadership team will aim our goals towards this year. He tāngata, he tāngata, he tāngata. It is the people, it is the people, it is the people. In the purest form this means bringing your voices to action will be our most important duty for this year. The simplicity of this Whakatauki is what makes it so powerful. It is a simple yet important goal that will be what we strive for in this academic year.
We are here to not only lead you but guide, help and support you throughout your time here at John Paul II.
To achieve this Whakatauki, we will be following a Strategic Plan for 2024 to 2026 which is already being used in our education.
This plan is separated into four areas of school life at John Paul II. The Goals for each area were created through the collaboration of the entire Student Leadership Team.
The first area is Wairua – The goal that represents Wairua, Catholic Character, within our school is: To rekindle people’s faith and create a personal relationship with Jesus. Emphasizing that Christianity is about building a relationship rather than just following a religion, using the theme “Pilgrims of Hope” set by Pope Francis for 2025. The second area is Ako, Learners at the centre. The goal for Ako is: To promote growth and teamwork within our school community.
The third area is Hauora, the whole person’s well-being and values: To promote inclusivity for all students in all aspects of school life.
The fourth and final area is Panekiratanga, a culture of excellence: To provide opportunities to see the whole student body thrive by catering to academic, cultural and creative needs.
Another aspect of our School that I want to focus on are the Marist and Mercy history and values, those that remind me to stay humble and always listen and seek God before making decisions:- In the Way of Mary: Live one’s life following the example of Mary, the mother of Jesus, by embodying her virtues like humility, compassion, faithfulness, and a deep devotion to God and family-spirit; relating to each other as members of the John Paul II whanau, building community, offering acceptance and belonging, sharing our successes and failures, setting clear standards of honesty, respect, and tolerance. I also strongly believe that students will respect and understand the value of our school when they know about it’s history, from Pope John Paul II to Marcellin Champagnat and Catherine McAuley. As a first-generation immigrant from India, moving to New Zealand five years ago, I have learned to embrace every opportunity that comes my way, making Lemonade with every Lemon that comes my way.
Though settling into a new environment was challenging, it opened doors to many good things, especially through this school. By the end of the year, I wish to leave a lasting imprint on the people of JPII. I hope these words uplift you as they do me.
“The LORD your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love, he will no longer rebuke you but will rejoice over you with singing.” Zephaniah 3:17

Mercy Leader
Kia ora, ko Pyper Murphy toku ingoa
I am the Mercy Leader for 2025. Being Mercy Leader has always been a goal of mine and I feel very privileged to be able to represent John Paul II in this role.
I cannot wait to bring more of my contributions and ideas into this school during my last year at High School.
There are six foundation values for the Mercy Leader. They are the qualities that the Mercy Leader have and will strive to implement throughout the year.
These values are,
Excellence, Hospitality, Respect, Service, Social Justice and Compassion.
I try to live by these values and aim to implement them through initiatives throughout the year and, further enlighten others with the knowledge of these values.
I have many ideas that I cannot wait to share with students and implement them into our school life.
One of my larger plans revolves around helping all students’ voices be heard.
I know how hard it can be when you have ideas for the school, to be able to come forward and mention them to people. Sometimes it can just be easier to stay quiet than to speak up. This is the reasoning behind my initiative called ‘Voices Heard’. I will be creating an easy accessible way for students to be able to voice their opinions.
My role as Mercy Leader, and with the help of the Marist Leader and student council, will be to bring as many ideas to life as possible! Everyone deserves to be heard and everyone deserves a chance. I want to make this happen for as many people as possible.
I am excited to work with the whole Student Leadership team to help bring their ideas and initiatives to life, by supporting and always being on hand whenever and wherever needed. Leadership isn’t just about working as one but working together in order to help everyone succeed.
I would lastly like all of the students to know that I am always around to talk. If you have any questions, want to get to know the Leadership team more or just want to have a chat, I am always around and always willing to support.
A last word of advice from me, don’t be afraid! There is no use in holding yourself back. The only person you have to compete with is yourself so take every opportunity you get and don’t be afraid to make your mark at John Paul II. Our head students act as the ambassadors for Catholic character at JPII, supporting the formation of Eucharistic Ministers and encouraging students to explore their faith in a positive and inclusive way.
Work with school leaders and the student body to support school events Contribute to the planning and organisation of cultural initiatives within the school, including cultural week, cultural evening, Kapa haka group, the school pōwhiri or mihi whakatau Represent the school at formal occasions as required Works with house leaders to promote student participation in key school sporting events e.g. athletics day, swimming sports, cross country, and house competitions/activities Works with other school leaders to promote the improvement of the school environment e.g. recycling, rubbish duty, murals, and the beautification of JPII site Work with other school leaders and local environmental organisations to promote ‘act local, think global’ causes e.g. beach clean-up, community service, environmental innovation awareness at JPII Works with the Pastoral Care Team and Whānau teachers to promote wellbeing initiatives in the school, including Te Whare Tapa Whā Collaborates with other student leaders to achieve positive outcomes for the school and students Shares progress and achievements termly through an article in the newsletter, and a final report for the school yearbook.

Mission Leader
Roshni Francis
Mission Leader
As the mission leader of 2025 I want to help pique the curiosity of youth in our school regarding faith, such as allowing them to question and find answers regarding faith.
By using the theme set by Pope Francis for 2025, which is “Pilgrims of Hope”, I wish to implement this very hope to the students at John Paul II High school; rekindle people’s faith and create a path from them to build a relationship with Christ, or perhaps even strike the match of faith that could grow abundantly spreading throughout the world.
I wish for our mission team to serve as vessels of Christ’s light love, bringing those who are in a time of need to come to God, and create their own unique, beautiful and individual relationship with Him.
We as young members of the Christian faith are able to show that Christianity is not just a religion but rather it is a relationship. That God is not just a figure, but a Father figure.
Most importantly, I hope to be able to create at least a small bit of hope in the heart of every individual at our school, just as it says in the bible ” For truly I tell you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.” (Matthew 17:20-21). May we as a school continue to grow in our faith, and strive for the impossible.

Katie Boddy
Environment Leader
My name is Katie Boddy and along with Isaac Wallis, we are your 2025 Environment leaders.
I’ve always had a passion for science which in recent years my interests have changed further and focused more to environmental sciences and geology.
Attending the Waitaha Positive Action for the Environment conference last year has given me ideas and the ability to create a positive impact on the environment within our school and wider community.
Through my time at JPII, I have been blessed with many opportunities to extend my leadership and knowledge about the environment and sustainability, I am looking forward to working alongside the school body, student leadership team and Isaac to implement these new ideas.
Together we plan on implementing many new proposals within our school to create a more environmentally sustainable school environment. We are looking at a new proposal out in the community which will widely benefit Greymouth! It would be great to have a club of keen students to help us with this initiative once we get it off the ground!
A few of our other goals include reducing red bin waste, the upkeep of the school’s greenery and brightening up the school, which as we probably can all agree, our school needs a pop of colour!
We both look forward to working with you all throughout 2025!

Sports Leader
Hello, my name is Sam Bryan
I am John Paul II’s Sports Leader for 2025 alongside Isabel Johansen.
We both are looking towards making a lot of things happen around JPII, with our main priority being to get as many people involved in activities as possible. So far during my time at John Paul II, I am proud to have represented the school in a variety of sports, displaying our school’s values the best I can whilst also trying my hardest to boost and motivate others around me during these physical activities. This Is what I plan to do throughout the ongoing years here at John Paul II in my new role.
Isabel and I have plans to get as many people in our school community involved in activities for all years and skills. Activities planned are teachers versus seniors competition also seniors vs juniors match, along with some less physical activities such as board game competitions or tower and bridge construction challenges for our new Waka groups to participate in.
We also plan on improving certain aspects of the school like the netball courts and including more options for breaks. We have plenty more plans yet to come to fruition.

School Spirit Leader
.Hello, my name is Diana Chizuni
I am a Year 12 student at John Paul II High School.
I am honored to have been allocated the role of school spirit leader, alongside my partner, Jack Honey.
True leadership isn't about the badge; it’s about all the hard work you put in to deserve it, and I’m hoping to demonstrate that throughout the rest of the year.
As a leader, I want to develop school activities, such as Friday afternoon events, that will allow the whole school to be involved and participate, and much more.
As we have stopped house groups and are now doing wakas, Jack and I would both like to develop this throughout the year and am looking forward to seeing this develop.
I want to create opportunities for students to feel excited about coming to school! In the long run, I truly hope that the actions I take as school spirit leader will inspire future year levels to want to become leaders themselves one day.

I’m Jack Honey, a year 12 student and I am one of the School spirit leaders for 2025, working alongside Diana Chizuni who is the other School spirit leader this year.
You may have seen me around the school before, likely playing volleyball or having a game of uno in the library on a rainy day.
In previous years I was a proud member of Saints working to get as many house points as possible to win that house shield at the end of the year. While Saints might not have won last year, coming into this year that competitiveness I had has not faded and with the changes underway with the house system (JPII’s 5 houses are being re-imagined as 4 waka), my main goal this year will be to bring that competitive school spirit back and better than ever.
Together we aim to do this by developing and improving upon whanau activities and waka competitions, such as getting more exciting Friday afternoon activities that the whole school can participate in.
We both look forward to working with our committee and the other leaders to come up with new ideas and opportunities for whole school participation and improving competition, so stay tuned!

Sports Leader
Hi, I am Isabel Johansen
For 2025 both I and Sam Bryan have been appointed the role of the sports leaders for John Paul II.
We have started to create plans and ideas for what we want to achieve throughout this year to help our school thrive with our sports and student engagement.
I enjoy playing many sports and staying active. I’ve represented John Paul II multiple times for many different sporting events and given many new sports/activities a go which has led me to encourage you all to do the same.
This year Sam and I want to fundraise so we can upgrade sports equipment around the school and for the tournament players. We would like to get an insight into what students want to see happening and what activities they would enjoy doing and prefer doing so we can make it a reality. One of our main goals is to get more students to participate in both sports events and/or activities, especially for females. Together we have discussed new activities and sports matches we would like to take place this year like teacher vs students or senior vs junior competitions. Also we have planned some fun activities that will happen throughout the year where you can get the opportunity to earn Waka points.

Cameron Klempel
Academic Leader
Hello everyone
I am Cameron Klempel and the John Paul II Academic Leader of 2025.
My plan for JPII is to help students learn about NCEA Scholarships, and to bring that opportunity to school. This is a great opportunity for interested students as the prizes can range from $500 for a scholarship in one subject, to $30,000 spread over three years for an outstanding scholarship in three subjects.
I will send out a form to all students shortly to find out who wants extension or the chance to sit scholarship exams and will organise groups and programs to get everyone the extension they need or want. I would like to continue some initiatives set up last year, such as the riddle competition and the tutoring program, but would like to extend the tutoring program to encompass some literacy as well, to best ensure our juniors are ready to sit their co-requisite exams.
I am also keen to organise activities with the robotics equipment, and will likely get my committee to start investigating possibilities.
Another initiative I would like to implement is a weekly inter-house competition to be completed in form times that is somewhat academic related, to help build house spirit as well as to challenge students in academic competitions. I am also able to help anyone with their school work, send me an email or come talk to me and I’d be more than happy to help. These are my main goals that I would like to achieve, and I’m looking forward to meeting all of you throughout the year.

Ko Antonia toku ingoa
I am the leader of Hauora and Wellbeing for 2025.
Incorporating Te Whare Tapu Whā allows me to fully look after all aspects of students wellbeing, whether this be improving mental wellness, fitness levels, promoting healthier lifestyles, expanding spiritual connections or even just being a friend when you need one.
Hauora isn’t just your physical health. It’s also about being able to recognise when you know you’re not okay and knowing there’s support there for you; whether this support is provided by your leaders, teachers or peers.
As a leader I want to support you and your wellbeing at John Paul II High School.
Being a leader is not about having a title, true leadership is about having a positive impact and inspiring others.
This year I hope to help students find outlets and methods to release their stresses, which may stem from their social and academic lives, in healthier ways that positively promote all aspects of their hauora/wellbeing. I want to support you to continue your wellbeing journey by helping you set your own achievable goals.
Helping students to improve their Hauora by achieving these small achievable goals builds confidence and improves general sense of wellbeing.
School isn’t easy, but I want to make it easier for students to show up. I want them to feel supported by their peers, as well as their teachers. A simple act of kindness, such as encouraging others can increase one’s sense of self-esteem and motivation to keep going.
Wellbeing is an individual journey, but it is a journey that takes a kind and supportive environment. This Journey we are about to embark on will encourage both students and staff to come together and celebrate the small successes that we have each day.

Wellbeing is an individual journey, but it is a journey that takes a kind and supportive environment. This Journey we are about to embark on will encourage both students and staff to come together and celebrate the small successes that we have each day.

Isaac Wallis
Environment Leader
My name is Isaac Wallis, I look forward to being the 2025 environmental leader of John Paul ll Highschool as a shared effort with Katie Boddy. We look forward to being part of the leadership team actively working to improve the lifestyle and wellbeing of the school and students.
Our focus for this year is improving recycling and waste management within the school as well as a general decrease in litter around the school; other ideas will also be thoroughly discussed and planned. My passion for the environment in recent years can be linked to biology, a subject which I've taken since Yr 9, my interest only grew since then and further led me to interview for the role of 2025 environmental leader. I hope that Katie and I will strive to fulfill the position and improve the school during this year.
